Entry 1: F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2009

I was walking along Orchard Road and saw lots of Formula One SGP posters along the streets and in bus stops.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2009 Poster

F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2009 Poster

I love the photo on the posters. It creates excitement for this major event with its vibrant colours on the posters. Also, it’s nicely portrayed, with relevant information about the race, like venue, dates and enquiry channels like website and number. The poster is like a form of pathos to the public as it appeals to the people who love to be at such an exciting or major event.
There is lots of publicity going on for the event.  Another example for its advertising campaign is the television commercial.
With its loud and exciting sounds in the commercial, interests more people for this event. Even, someone like me, who know nothing about racing, may develop interest and wants to know more about it. We perceive, from theses advertising channels, that this event is going to be cool and exciting one.
Also, there is also a F1 Rock concert coming soon! With lots of pop stars, like Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, performing, will furthermore attract more people for this event. Citing from http://www.f1singapore.com/news/Organisers-of-F1-Rocks-say-event-is-getting-bigger.shtml#singaporegp, ” The F1 Rocks concert will be shown on MediaCorp’s Channel 5 after the event is over and organisers are also in talks with over 100 broadcasters around the world to televise a one-hour special show of the event. “, shows that more interest will be aroused for this event globally.
On the other hand, there is also an official website for this event, http://www.singaporegp.sg/index.php. This allows more information regards to this event, to be passed on to more public, including global viewers.
The above advertisements are like forms of a linear model of communication, where there is only one-way communication. Hence, there are other channels provided for people to respond like facebook, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Singapore-GP-Official-Page/102227592190, which acts like an interactive model for people to give their feedback. However, there is time lapse in between for responses and feedback to be carried out.
Another better channel of communication for this event is the enquiry number, 67386738. It is a form of transactional model, where people can have immediate responses to their enquires, and better communication about this event.
Hence, to conclude, I feel that the advertising campaign for Formula One Singapore Grand Prix is very good as it makes use of the three models of communication to the public and also widens the range of advertising for more people to know about this event.

  1. Hey! I agree that the advertising campaign for F1 is a success. The organisers use many different types of medium to spread the news. I believe that one will at least come across one of these ad. For example, on tv commercials, or banners along orchard road. Also, I think that F1 will attract alot of people from around the world to come to Singapore. This may help boost sales for the retail sector, because foreigners would shop around Singapore during their stay here. :)

    • Hey =) Thanks for commenting and agreeing with me!
I agree with your perspective too that more tourists will be visiting Singapore due to this major event and its well publicity, and thus, may boost the tourism revenue for Singapore.

However, the extent of the rise in this revenue is uncertain, as some tourists may come to Singapore just for this event and not to sight-seeing. Also, there is an economic slowdown globally, people may not want to spend much on their expenditures. This may, in turn, causes lesser expenditures and more tourists during this period.

  2. Hello.

As an ardent supporter of F1, I’m really looking forward to seeing my favourite stars fight and sweat it all out at the race. Actually, I’m more interested in the race than any other events going on. So I think I’m just gonna stay at the comfort of my house to watch the crowning of the second Champion of the Singtel Singapore Grand Prix.

These advertisement for this event is widespread in our little island especially in the town area (esp City hall area and Orchard etc). Every Singaporean will also be sort of informed about the race because it has always been publicised since the start of the year. In lieu of this, shops in malls also churned out a sale during the F1 period, which is coming soon. This thus will be able to help to boost their revenue in this “festive” period where the image of Singapore will be portrayed to the world.

However, we should never downplay the fact that the Singapore government has put a lot of emphasis on annual motorsport racing event as they are also going to open the new Motorsport arena at Changi in the near future. This will further help to boost the tourism revenue and thus help the Singapore economy to grow steadily. And I do believe that Singapore has done a really good job in trying to play good hosts to our guests from overseas so that they will feel at home in this little island of ours.

    • Hello there =)
      Thanks for commenting!
Me too, I am also looking forward for this event! I agree with your perspective that this advertisement is widespread here in Singapore, thus causing more recognition in people. Also, there are news on television regards to this event at the beginning of the year. However, it is till recently that is having their posters in streets and television commercial.

I also agreed with your point that the Singapore government is giving lots of focus on this event because of the soon-to-be launched Motorsport Arena, and also, because it is reckoned as a major event internationally, causing attention from all racing lovers. By hosting this event in Singapore, this, in turn, will boost recognition of Singapore to people from other parts of the world.

Once again, thanks for your comment =)

  3. Yes, being an international event, I believe it will succeed even without much advertising. Yet, advertisement do play an important part too. It not only creates awareness and interests in public, but has also developed a fad in Singapore. The multi-media advertising strategy somewhat makes me feel that everyone has got to know about this event!

I agree with all that this “festive” season probably will boost sales, for instance, the ticketing of F1 Singtel Singapore Grand Pix (which was sold out as soon as they were available in the market) and F1 Rocks concert respectively, and in the retail industry, that were mentioned above. Moreover, not to forget F&B and hospitality industries which attracted as much crowd who may want to catch a glimpse of the racing cars during the F1 match.

Overwhelming responses from the public such as early reservations in restaurants/hotels have somewhat predicted the success of the F1 event, thanks to advertisement!

    • Hey =) Thanks for commenting and agreeing with me!
I also agree with you that this major event will succeed even without much publicity, as it involves interests of racing lovers and fans globally.

To me, advertisements for this event is important too. Due to the curiosities of non-racing lovers towards this event, they would want to know more about this event and thus, attracting more people to know more about racing. Hence, it may also increases the number of racing fans globally.

I also agree with both of you that this “festive” season will raise tourism revenue due to the overwhelming responses for tickets. However, the tourism revenue during this perod may not be as high as the previous F1 race, as there is a global economic slowdown.

But, I also agree with you that the F&B and hospitality industries will have a raise in their profits during this period of time. It seems like the global slowdown is not affecting much on this event as this event is the excitement and interest of the global consumers.

Once again, thanks for commenting! =)
Feel free to comment on my next post.

  4. Yes I agree the advertising campaign is done very well. (:

As many of us know, F1 racing is a popular event that many countries host. Since it is an international event, the organisers definitely have to run a full-on advertising campaign (with the three models of communication as mentioned by the author of the post) to spread the awareness of such an event to the masses.

I myself know of a few F1 fanatics who are just short of buying the tickets to witness the “vroom and broom” up close and personal. They are very certain that they will buy in the future and after the whole advertising campaign they are even more certain of it now. And I am sure there are definitely a lot more F1 fanatics like them out there.

Also, Singapore is special as it hosts the world’s one and only night race! Racing at night is a totally different experience compared to the normal daytime racing. I say this as I was working right next to one of the racing tracks last yr and to be able to witness it live is really uber cool. Haha. Banking in on the “Night Race” words is definitely a clever move from the organisers.

Hence, I would say that the advertising campaign is really good at attracting the crowds to join in the race and witness their favourite racers win. (or lose, depending.) (:

    • Hi there =)
Thanks for commenting and sharing your experiences!
I agree with you that F1 in Singapore is special as it hosts night race for F1. It should attract more viewers to come for this match as it is unique to other races held in other countries in daytime.

Also, thanks for agreeing with me this campaign is a really good one. =)

  5. Hmm

Ya I believe the govt or the orgeniser did a great job in advertising the F1 race in singapore. F1 racing is a brand new kind of sports that is introduced in Singapore for the sake of economic and image reasons + gaining experience to host the youth Olympic. So these advertising campaigns carried out are like a dry-run for the Youth Olypmpic held next year which is of much more importance. Cos F1 was held before in Singapore already, and we did get a posittive results as we have expected the ‘Brand New Craze’ should have. Thus, I believe these extensive advertisements are meant for tourist in Singapore. Hopefully, they will extend their stay in Singapore after knowing the F1 race. AT the same time, create an image that Singaporeans themselves are very interested in sports, thus change their perception of Singapore as a country that soley focus on economic benefits and not recreation of the citizens. All in prep for Youth Olympics 2010.
Youth Olympics hold a greater impt than F1 is either than selling Spore as a global and friendly city + economic games, we also selling our Singapore team. That our youths are well-verse in both acadamics and sports (we are top in science and math and music, but never sports(rely on foreign talent)).
I believe these advertisement campaigns are basically to research on how much money must they pump in othe way they advertise such that they WILL achieve what the govt want in the first place unlike the failure in the first F1. Anyway, now pple care more about the price of gold as comapared to F1.

    • edit Line 8 = did NOT get a positve

      • Hi =)
Thanks for commenting! Yes, the previous F1 race hosted in Singapore was not as heavily advertised as the recent one. There are lesser tourists being attracted to Singapore as the first F1 race hosted in Singapore. I also do believe that this advertising campaign is like a dry run for the upcoming Youth Olympics. Using this as a dry run, the advertising campaign of Youth Olympics may be as successful or even more successful than this recent F1 race.

  6. Hello,

Yes it is true that with mass media, we are able to promote national events rapidly and also to a massive audience. F1 being such a widely broadcasted event, it is no doubt that our government invests huge sums of money to highlight such a major event. Its important that a good image of our city is presented, not only to assure the sponsors of this annual night race, but also a mode in attracting foreign investors over to Singapore.

I guess other than the English Premier League that many Singaporeans are hyped up over the recent years, F1 and motor GP would probably be the next wave of heated topics that will be discussed on our dinner tables.

    • Hi HUI! =)

Yes, I agree with your viewpoint that with mass media, events can be promoted rapidly and more effectively. Government do pumped in lots of money for this advertising campaign to make this event as a successful one.
      Thanks for commenting!

  7. I agree with you that Singapore really did a good job in advertising. With all that vibrant colours on the posters, F1 concert featuring popular singers like Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas, coupled by the usage of social website like facebook to raise awareness of F1, it is most likely that the event will be a success.
In my opinion, i believe the usage of social websites like facebook is the most effective way to bring up the hypes for this event as it will attract people to be interested in F1 when their friends on facebook join a particular group or like any application or posts put up by the F1 committee. Furthermore as facebook links up to the global network, people from overseas who get notified and is interested in this event could come down to Singapore to view the race, hence boosting revenues.
Although the haze could pose problems for the event to be run successfully, i believed that people will definitely look forward to the opening and success of the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix with all the advertisements going around.

    • Hi Keli! =)

Thanks for commenting and agreeing with me! I agree with you viewpoint that there is other factor that causes the event not to be run on as smoothly with lesser tourists being attracted to Singapore to watch the races. However, I believe too that this factor only constituents minority of tourists being affected and decided not to visit Singapore for this race.

  8. Indeed, advertisements raise the profile of an event. I agree with you in how the print ads made the event more exciting! Not only does the message get disseminated across the nation, it gives status to the event too.(:

    • Hi Aiming! =)

Thanks for your comment. I agree with you too that with advertisements, status can be given to the event with more attention and focus being attracted to it.
